Year 7 Humanities

Unit 1: Diversity and Democracy (Civcs)  

In this unit students study the key features of democracy and Australia's federal system of government, and explore how values shape our democracy. Students also explore how Australia's secular system of government supports a diverse society with shared values that promote community cohesion. They will create short format social media videos that share their knowledge of these features of our society with new migrants to Australia. 

Unit 2: Water in the World (Geography) 

In this unit, students focus on the many uses of water, the ways it is perceived and valued, and the hazards associated with environmental processes. Students examine the distribution of its different forms as a resource, its varying availability in time and across space, and its scarcity. They complete an exam focussing on the ways water connects and changes places as it moves through the environment, and the impact of water-related hazards on human-environment relationships. 

Unit 3: Place and Liveability (Geography) 

This unit focuses on the factors that influence liveability, how it is perceived, and the idea that places provide us with the services and facilities needed to support and enhance our lives. Students examine the distribution of these spaces, and how they are planned and managed by people. They also consider the ways that the liveability of a place is enhanced and how sustainability is managed. A field study within the local area is completed in this unit. 

Unit 4: Deep Time (History) 

In Year 7, students describe the historical significance of the ancient past and the histories of early First Nations Peoples of Australia. They identify the causes and effects of events, developments and achievements connected to groups and individuals in Australia and other societies from the ancient past. Students will complete an investigation into this era, and develop a multimodal product to share their learning. 

Unit 5: The Mediterranean World (History) 

In this unit, students will  describe the social, religious, cultural, economic, environmental and/or political aspects related to changes and continuities in societies from the Ancient Mediterranean World. They identify the roles and achievements of significant individuals and groups, and the influences on the development of ancient societies. Students will complete a source inquiry to show their understanding and skills in this unit. 

Year 8 Humanities 

Unit 1: The Business Environment (Economics and Business) 

Students investigate a range of factors that influence decision-making by individuals and business. These include the allocation of resources to produce goods and services in the operation of markets, and the different ways that businesses may adapt to opportunities in markets or respond to the changing nature of work. Students will develop a written statement of advice to a small business operator to demonstrate their understanding of the key ideas on the unit. 

Unit 2: Landforms and Landscapes (Geography) 

In this unit students focus on the processes that shape individual landforms, the values and meanings placed on landforms and landscapes by diverse cultures, and hazards associated with landscapes. Students explore the distribution of Australia's distinctive landscapes and significant landforms. They also consider the ways that the sustainability of significant landscapes and the impacts of hazards are managed. They will complete a combination exam to demonstrate their understanding. 

​Unit 3: Changing Nations (Geography) 

Students investigate the changing human geography of countries with the process of urbanisation, the reasons for the high level of urban concentration in Australia, and the influences of internal and international migration. Students can examine the distribution of population in Australia compared to other countries and shifts in population distribution over time. They also focus on the ways that sustainability of Australia's urban areas is managed. A data report is developed to show application of skill and demonstrate understanding in this unit. 

Unit 4: Medieval Europe (History) 

In this unit students describe the historical significance of the periods between the ancient and modern past. They explain the causes and effects of events, developments, turning points or challenges in Medieval Europe, with a focus on the Black Death and the Crusades. Students will complete an extended response to stimulus in this unit to show their understanding. 

Unit 5: Shogunate Japan (History) 

In this unit students  describe the social, religious, cultural, economic, environmental and/or political aspects related to the changes and continuities in a Shogunate society. Students describe the role of significant individuals, groups and institutions connected to feudal Japan,  and their influences on historical events. Students will complete a source inquiry to show their understanding and skills in this unit. ​

Year 9 Civics 

Unit 1: Government 

In this unit students further develop their understanding of Australia's federal system of government and how it enables change. Students will role play developing political parties, parliamentary debates and committee hearings. They will complete a combination exam to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. 

Unit 2: Justice 

In this unit, students investigate the features and jurisdictions of Australia's court system, including its role in applying and interpreting Australian law. They will participate in mock trials and visit a magistrates court. Students will create an infographic outlining the jurisdictions and features of the courts in Queensland. 

Unit 3: Citizenship 

In this unit students will examine global connectedness and how this is shaping contemporary Australian society and global citizenship. They will complete a research task investigating the role of media reflecting social values. 

​Year 9 History 

Unit 1: Industrial Revolution 

In this unit students  describe the social, cultural, economic and/or political aspects related to the changes and continuities that lead to and came out of the Industrial Revolution, including the global movements of people. Students will complete an investigation into this era, and develop a multimodal product to share their learning. 

Unit 2: Making a Nation 

In this unit, students explain the role of significant ideas, individuals, groups and institutions connected to the development of Australia from a British colony to an independent nation, and their influences on the historical events. Students will complete a response to stimulus exam in order to show their understanding in this unit. 

Unit 3: World War One 

In this unit students explain the causes and effects of events, developments, turning points or movements globally, in Australia and in relation to World War I. Students will complete a source inquiry to show their understanding and skills in this unit. 

​Year 9 Economics and Business 

Unit 1: Financial Risk and Reward  

In this unit students focus on consumer and financial risks and rewards. They examine the influence of Australia's financial sector on economic decision-making for how it contributes to a prosperous economy and responds to challenges impacting on peoples' lives and choices. Students will develop a written statement of advice to a small business operator to demonstrate their understanding of the key ideas on the unit. 

Unit 2: Australia and Asia 

In this unit, students investigate what it means for Australia to be part of the global economy, particularly through trade with the countries of Asia and the influence on the allocation of resource. They examine the implications of interdependence of participants in the global economy for decision-making. Students will create an infographic outlining the interdependence of Australia and a country in Asia for trade the implications of this interdependence. ​

Year 9 Geography 

Unit 1: Biomes and Food Security 

In this unit students focus on the biomes of the world, their characteristics and significance as a source of food and fibre. Students examine the distribution of biomes as regions, and their contribution to food production and food security. They consider the effects of the alteration of biomes, and the environmental challenges and constraints of expanding sustainable food production in the future. A field study within the local area is completed in this unit. 

Unit 2: Geography of Interconnection 

In this unit, students focus on how people, through their choices and actions, are connected to places throughout the world in a wide variety of ways, and how these connections help to make and change places and their environments. Students examine the nature of these connections between people and places through the products people buy and the effects of their production on the places that make them. Students will complete a research report to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in this unit. ​

Year 10 History 

Unit 1: World War 2 

In this unit students explain the historical significance of the period between 1918 and the early 21st century. They explain the causes and effects of events, developments, turning points or movements in 20th century Australia and internationally, leading up to and through World War II, and the post-war world.  Students will complete an extended response to stimulus in this unit to show their understanding. 

Unit 2: Making Modern Australia 

In this unit, students describe social, cultural, economic and/or political aspects, including international developments, related to the changes and continuities in Australian society over the period of 1945 to today. They will complete focussed investigations into post war migration and the reconciliation movements in Australia. Students will complete a source inquiry to show their understanding and skills in this unit. 

Unit 3: A Globalising World 

Note: This unit will be developed from a student selected area of study. Students explain the role of significant ideas, individuals, groups and institutions connected to the developments of this period and their influences on Australian and global history.  Students will complete a response to stimulus exam in order to show their understanding in this unit. ​

Year 10 Business and Legal

Unit 1: Superannuation (Economics and Business) 

In this unit students investigate  Australia's superannuation system and the factors that influence major consumer and financial decisions are also considered for how they contribute to human and financial wellbeing and the common good of society. Students will develop a written statement of advice to an individual to demonstrate their understanding of the key ideas in the unit. 

Unit 2: Managing the Economy (Economics and Business) 

In this unit, students examine the government's management of the economy to improve economic growth and living standards. They also study the responses of business to changing economic conditions, including the way they improve productivity and manage their workforce. They will complete a research task investigating the role of government in managing and improving these factors. ​

Unit 3: Government (Civics and Citizenship) 

In this unit students compare Australia's federal system of government with another system of government in a country in Asia. Students examine Australia's roles and responsibilities within the international context, such as its involvement with the United Nations and responses to global issues.  

Unit 4: Justice (Civics and Citizenship) 

In this unit, students study the purpose and work of the High Court. They examine how rights are protected in Australia, and investigate the values and practices that enable a democratic society to be sustained. Students reflect on their rights, privileges and responsibilities as active and informed citizens.
